Sinovac Biotech To Test It’s COVID-19 Vaccine On Children and Teenagers.
Sinovac Biotech plans to commence a clinical trial of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine on children and teenagers later this month, expanding its tests despite being in the final stage of study with adults.
The clinical trial which was already apporved by Chinese regulator, will include a total of 552 healthy participants aged between 3 to 17 and will be given two doses of US-listed Sinovac’s CoronaVac or a placebo in a combined Phase 1 and Phase 2 trial estimated to begin at the end of this month at Hebei, China.
Sinovac said earlier this month CoronaVac appeared to be safe and able to induce antibodies for older people, while the vaccine-generated antibody levels were slightly lower than seen in younger adults, citing preliminary results from an early to mid-stage trial.
Pfizer and BioNTech to expand their COVID-19 clinical trials.
Pfizer and BioNTech will be expanding the Phase 3 trial of their COVID-19 vaccine by 50%, which could allow the companies to collect more safety and efficacy data and to increase the diversity of the study’s participants.
The companies said in a press release that they would increase the size of the study to 44,000 participants, up from an initial recruitment goal of 30,000 individuals, of which will need the FDA’s approval before going into effect.
By expanding the trial, it will be easier for the company to demonstrate whether the vaccine is effective against the COVID-19 virus. The companies also said that the change will allow the study to include a more diverse population and will include teenagers as young as 16, people with stable HIV, and those with hepatitis C or hepatitis B.
The companies said that the trial is expected to reach its initial target of 30,000 patients by next week.
Sinovac Biotech and Alibaba Health Information Technology To Build platform for COVID-19 vaccine.
Sinovac Biotech has recently signed a strategic agreement with Alibaba Health Information Technology to build a platform for COVID-19 vaccine inoculation in the future, and will eventually expand into broader areas including online booking of vaccines and post-vaccination health condition follow-up
Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate CoronaVac is currently being tested in final-stages at a large-scale in Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey respectively. The vaccine has already been given to thousands of people through China’s emergency use programme that was launched back in July.
