Eli Lilly and Company have launched the Leonard Award, to acknowledge a diverse group of five individuals working to advance diabetes management through innovative thinking and novel approaches. Lilly will donate a total of $100,000 in recognition of the winners to Life for a Child, a non-profit organisation supporting young people with Type 1 diabetes in less-resourced countries. Nominations are now open, and winners will be announced ahead of World Diabetes Day.

The Leonard Award seeks to acknowledge innovation and positive achievements in the diabetes community, and Eli Lilly and Company will donate a total of $100,000 to Life for a Child on behalf of its five winners.

Inspired by Leonard Thompson, the first diabetes patient to be treated with insulin in 1922, the Award will recognise one from each of the following five categories: teens/young adults, advocates/advocacy professionals, endocrinologists/primary care physicians, diabetes educators/nurses, and researchers. $20,000 will be donated in recognition of each winner to Life for a Child, a non-profit organisation that makes care, education, and lifesaving medicines and supplies available to children and young people with Type 1 diabetes in less-resourced countries.

“Each submission to the Leonard Award will represent the strength and dedication of a broad community, and we are eager to hear from individuals who have made a positive impact through their commitment to people living with diabetes,” said Leonard Glass, M.D., F.A.C.E., vice president of Lilly Diabetes Global Medical Affairs.

Graham Ogle, general manager of Life for a Child, added, “We’re honoured to receive such a donation from Lilly and look forward to learning more about the individuals who are addressing important needs within the diabetes community. This donation supports our shared vision to build a healthier world and continued mission of supporting children and youth with type 1 diabetes.”

Nominees will be assessed based on an original project, innovation or effort towards diabetes management, by an external judges panel comprised of leading minds in diabetes care. Dr. Glass will represent Lilly on the panel.

Nominations and submissions are being accepted between now and 31st August 2021, and the five winners will be announced in November in time for World Diabetes Day. More information can be found at Lilly.com/LeonardAward
