Adsorption
Adsorption describes the physical process by which molecules adhere to surfaces through non-covalent interactions including electrostatic forces, hydrophobic effects, van der Waals attractions, and hydrogen bonding. This surface phenomenon impacts drug stability, device compatibility, and analytical measurement accuracy throughout pharmaceutical development.
The pharmaceutical industry manages adsorption throughout manufacturing, formulation, and analytical workflows. Protein therapeutics may adsorb to container surfaces, tubing, or filter membranes causing potency loss, requiring surfactant addition, surface treatment, or alternative container materials. Chromatography resins exploit controlled adsorption for selective purification. Analytical assays must account for non-specific adsorption affecting quantitative accuracy. Vaccine formulations may intentionally use adjuvant adsorption to antigens enhancing immune responses. Controlling adsorption behaviour ensures accurate dosing, product stability, and reliable analytical results throughout the product lifecycle.
