Oxygenation designates the process of supplying oxygen to biological systems, tissues, or cell cultures, supporting aerobic metabolism and maintaining cellular viability and function. In bioprocessing, oxygenation refers to controlled oxygen transfer into culture media within bioreactors, with levels influencing cellular growth rates, metabolic pathways, and product formation.
The biopharmaceutical industry manages oxygenation as a key parameter in upstream biomanufacturing for mammalian cell culture producing monoclonal antibodies, recombinant proteins, and viral vectors. Dissolved oxygen control affects cell growth, lactate production, pH stability, and glycosylation patterns, influencing product quality attributes and batch consistency. Bioreactor systems employ sparging, agitation, and oxygen-enriched gas feeds to maintain setpoints, with sensors enabling continuous monitoring and feedback control. Oxygenation also impacts microbial fermentation, where high oxygen demand may limit productivity without adequate mass transfer.
