Wave Bioreactor refers to a single-use bioreactor system that uses a rocking motion to generate gentle wave-like mixing within a disposable cell culture bag, enabling efficient oxygen transfer and nutrient distribution without traditional impellers. This design supports suspension cell cultures and certain adherent systems using microcarriers, offering a flexible platform for upstream processing at small to mid-scale volumes. Wave bioreactors are widely adopted in process development, seed train expansion, and production of biologics.

In the biopharmaceutical industry, wave bioreactors support manufacturing of recombinant proteins, viral vectors, vaccines, and cell therapy products. Their single-use format reduces cleaning validation requirements, lowers cross-contamination risk, and enables faster turnaround between campaigns, making them particularly valuable for multiproduct facilities and emerging modalities. Wave systems are commonly used for inoculum expansion prior to transfer into larger stirred-tank bioreactors. The gentle mixing environment benefits shear-sensitive cells and supports consistent culture performance. Critical parameters include rocking speed, rocking angle, working volume, gas flow rates, and temperature control. Limitations include scale constraints compared with large stainless-steel systems and the need for robust supply chain management for disposable components. As single-use manufacturing expands and demand grows for flexible production capacity, wave bioreactors remain important tools.
