The Global ADC Pipeline Race: Which Countries Are Really Leading?

For a long time, the global antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) landscape felt relatively easy to map. The United States and Europe dominated the conversation, Japan brought decades of experience in antibody and oncology research, and a handful of specialist companies were responsible for many of the technologies that made modern ADCs possible.
That picture has changed considerably.
Today, ADC development is becoming a genuinely global race. China has emerged as a major force in pipeline development, South Korea is building on its already formidable biologics manufacturing capabilities, Japan continues to bring deep technical expertise to the field, and the US remains a powerhouse across discovery, clinical development, investment and commercialisation. Europe, meanwhile, has built an ecosystem spanning antibody engineering, linker and payload technologies, conjugation, analytics and manufacturing that gives it an important role in the value chain.
So when we talk about the “leading countries” in ADCs, what are we measuring? Is it the number of candidates in development, the number of companies working on ADCs, the strength of the underlying technology base, or the ability to take those candidates all the way from discovery to commercial manufacturing?
That distinction matters more than ever.
China: The Pipeline Is Hard to Ignore
There is probably no more obvious change in the global ADC landscape than the rise of China.
Recent industry analysis has estimated that Chinese developers account for more than 42% of the global ADC pipeline, putting the country firmly at the centre of the current development landscape. What makes this particularly interesting is that China's growth is not simply coming from a larger number of conventional ADC programmes. Chinese companies are increasingly exploring more sophisticated approaches, including bispecific ADCs, dual-payload designs and other next-generation formats.
This is beginning to change the way the rest of the industry looks at Chinese biotech. Rather than being primarily a source of lower-cost development or manufacturing, Chinese companies are increasingly becoming sources of ADC innovation, platforms and assets that global pharmaceutical companies want access to.
The licensing activity tells part of that story. Global pharma companies are increasingly looking to China for promising biotech assets, and ADCs have become one of the areas attracting particularly strong interest.
The more interesting question, therefore, isn't whether China has become important to the ADC landscape. It clearly has.
The question is how much of the next generation of global ADC development will originate there.
The US: Still the Deepest ADC Ecosystem
If China has rapidly expanded its pipeline presence, the US still has an enormous advantage when you look at the depth of its overall ADC ecosystem.
One recent industry landscape identified 559 US companies active in ADCs, compared with 247 in China. That doesn't necessarily mean the US will produce the largest number of successful ADCs, but it does demonstrate the sheer breadth of the ecosystem, from early-stage biotech and platform companies through to pharmaceutical giants, specialist CDMOs, technology providers and investors.
And this depth matters because ADC development is not simply a race to produce another candidate.
Successful ADC development requires expertise across antibody discovery and engineering, linker and payload selection, conjugation, analytical characterisation, process development, clinical development and ultimately commercial manufacturing. The US has built significant capabilities across almost every part of that chain, supported by a deep pool of capital and a mature biopharma market.
So while China may be changing the balance of pipeline volume, the US still has one of the strongest ecosystems for turning innovation into a development and commercialisation story.
South Korea: From Biologics Manufacturing to ADC Ambition
South Korea is perhaps one of the most interesting countries to watch because its ADC opportunity sits at the intersection of two existing strengths: biologics manufacturing and an increasingly active drug-development ecosystem.
The number of companies working in ADCs in South Korea has grown rapidly, with one recent industry analysis identifying 91 ADC-active companies in 2025, representing approximately 47% year-on-year growth.
That growth is particularly interesting when you consider the country's existing manufacturing infrastructure. South Korea has already established itself as a major global destination for biologics manufacturing and CDMO services, so the expansion into ADCs creates the potential to connect antibody production, conjugation and commercial manufacturing capabilities within an increasingly sophisticated ecosystem.
The opportunity for Korea, therefore, may not simply be about building another large ADC pipeline. It could be about becoming one of the places where the increasingly complex manufacturing requirements of ADCs can be solved at scale.
Japan: Experience Still Counts
Japan doesn't have the same pipeline volume as China, but it would be a mistake to interpret that as a lack of relevance.
Japan has spent decades building expertise across antibodies, oncology and drug development, and that experience continues to give Japanese companies an important position in the ADC landscape. Patent activity also reflects this technical depth, with Japan accounting for around 16.5% of analysed ADC patent applications in one global assessment.
What makes Japan particularly interesting is the depth of knowledge sitting behind its ADC activity. The country's contribution isn't necessarily about producing the largest possible number of programmes; instead, it is about the accumulated expertise in antibody biology, oncology and complex therapeutic development that can support increasingly sophisticated ADC approaches.
In a field where the next generation of ADCs is becoming more technically demanding, that kind of experience shouldn't be underestimated.
Europe: The Ecosystem Behind the Molecule
Europe is perhaps the hardest region to judge using pipeline numbers alone.
It may not match China's development volume or the sheer number of ADC-active companies in the US, but Europe has something else going for it: a remarkably broad ecosystem supporting the technology behind ADCs.
Across the region, companies are working on antibody engineering, linker and payload technologies, conjugation platforms, analytical development, process development and manufacturing. Europe also has a strong network of pharmaceutical companies, specialist biotechs, CDMOs and research organisations that increasingly connect these capabilities.
Patent activity provides another indication of the region's technical importance, with Europe accounting for around 18.5% of analysed ADC patent applications in one global assessment.
That raises an interesting point about how we define leadership.
Europe may not win if the only metric is “Who has the most ADC candidates?”
But if the question becomes “Who has the technologies, expertise and manufacturing infrastructure needed to support the next generation of ADCs?”, the European position starts to look considerably more significant.
So, Who Is Actually Winning the ADC Race?
There probably isn't one answer, and that's what makes the current landscape so interesting.
China is emerging as a pipeline powerhouse and is pushing aggressively into next-generation ADC formats. The US continues to offer the deepest and broadest ecosystem for developing and commercialising these therapies. South Korea is building an increasingly compelling combination of biologics manufacturing and ADC capabilities, while Japan continues to benefit from decades of expertise in antibodies and oncology. Europe, meanwhile, has developed a broad technology and manufacturing ecosystem that supports many of the critical components needed to turn ADC innovation into reality.
And perhaps this is the more useful way to think about the global ADC race.
The future probably won't belong to the country with the biggest pipeline alone. It will belong to the ecosystems capable of connecting the entire value chain.
An innovative antibody needs the right engineering strategy. That antibody needs to be paired with the right linker and payload. The resulting molecule needs to be characterised, scaled, manufactured and eventually produced consistently at commercial scale.
In other words, ADC leadership is becoming less about owning one breakthrough technology and more about being able to connect many different capabilities together.
That is why the global ADC landscape is worth watching so closely right now.
The question isn't simply who has the most ADCs in development?
It's who is building the ecosystem capable of getting the next generation of ADCs all the way from an idea in the lab to a medicine that can reach patients?
And that race is only getting more interesting.
